Exploring the Alentejo in three days is an enriching experience that combines history, culture and stunning landscapes. This itinerary was inspired by the article “3-day itinerary in Alto Alentejo” from Turismo do Alentejo.
Day 1 | Évora:
Start your trip in Évora, about 1h30 from Lisbon. Known as the “Museum City”, Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the historic centre, visit the Roman Temple, Giraldo Square and the Church of São Francisco, where you will find the Chapel of Bones. Don’t miss the Aqueduto da Água de Prata, which is seven kilometres long. And then, take the opportunity to taste the local cuisine and Alentejo wines.
Day 2: Monsaraz, Vila Viçosa and Estremoz
In the morning, head to Monsaraz, a medieval village 50 minutes from Évora. Stroll through the cobblestone streets and visit Monsaraz Castle, which offers panoramic views over Lake Alqueva.
Next, head to Vila Viçosa, known as the “Princess of Alentejo”, about 50 minutes from Monsaraz. Here, we highlight the Ducal Palace, with its marble façade, and the 13th-century castle.
Finally, end the day in Estremoz, 20 minutes from Vila Viçosa. Explore the historic center, Estremoz Castle and the Torre das Três Coroas, built in white marble. Stay overnight in one of the local hotels.
Day 3: Elvas, Marvao and Castelo de Vide
Start your day in Elvas, 25 minutes from Estremoz. Known for its star-shaped fortifications, Elvas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça and admire its military architecture.
Next, head to Marvão, about 1h15 from Elvas. This medieval town offers stunning views of the Serra de São Mamede. Explore the narrow streets and the well-preserved castle.
Finally, the tour ends in Castelo de Vide, just 10 km from Marvão. Known as the “Sintra of the Alentejo”, this town stands out for its white houses, cobbled streets and historic Jewish quarter.
