Monte Selvagem is a park located in Lavre, in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, in the district of Évora. Created in 2004, it covers more than 20 hectares. It is a nature conservation center that combines an animal reserve with an adventure park and an educational project.
The park has more than 300 animals, from 70 wild and domestic species. Visitors can get to know the animals on the hill better and take advantage of the learning and entertainment areas scattered around the hill.
One of the park’s special features is that it only houses animals that have been confiscated by the authorities or that are overgrown in other parks. There are no animals from their natural habitats.
Part of its mission is to provide alternative habitats for animals in need of help, and to promote people’s contact with nature, protecting it, conserving it and educating them about sustainability.
Monte Selvagem is the fruit of a family’s dream and the work that the whole team puts into the space.
The space offers various activities:
- Autonomous walking tour
- Contact with domestic animals in the farm
- Observation of wild animals in natural habitats
- Zone for pci-nic
- Cafeteria with light meals
- Area for birthday parties and other events
- Souvenir store
- Park adapted for people with reduced mobility
In short, Monte Selvagem is one of Portugal’s most distinctive spaces for accommodating and protecting biodiversity, and for this reason it has won several awards.
