It is in an unforgettable setting, on the top of a remote mountain at the highest point in Portugal south of the Tagus, where an old walled town nestles, that the Marvão International Music Festival takes place.
Christoph Poppen, an internationally renowned German conductor, had the dream of holding a Classical Music Festival in Marvão. This dream came true in July 2014, and became a magical and unforgettable moment for everyone present. An authentic festival, where the unique location and environment were surpassed by the quality of the classic artists, an environment so inspiring that it excited and infected the public, in a phenomenon that ended up echoing across borders, proving its reissue mandatory.
The Alentejo village of Marvão is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. Marvão brings together in a perfect combination the architecture of a medieval castle with the amplitude of silence and the traces of the surrounding nature, which constitutes the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Marvão has all the necessary elements to create a unique atmosphere, a truly idyllic setting for an open-air Classical Music festival in its centuries-old infrastructure. It was in this place of rare beauty that maestro Christoph Poppen had the vision to unite this ancient land with his love of classical music and provide spectators with a classical music festival at the highest artistic level, immersed in a unique visual of natural beauty.
