The Castle of Alandroal is a work of military architecture from the reign of King Dinis, located at the highest point of the town of Alandroal in the Alentejo. Construction began in 1294 and was completed in 1298. If you visit the Castle, you’ll find these two dates engraved on one of the gates of the fortress and on the western elevation of the keep.
This fortress is important for characterizing the military architecture of the time of King Dinis, and also for recognizing the investment made at the time in castles in the Alentejo.
Main features:
- Gothic style.
- Oval plant.
- Three square towers at the corners.
- Solid keep.
- Main gate circled by two slightly advanced towers.
You can also find the name of the man responsible for leading the construction work on the castle engraved on it.
In the following centuries, the Castle did not play a very important role in terms of military security, as it quickly fell into decay. Some parts of the interior were ruined at the beginning of the 17th century.
Years later, the castle was restored in the 1940s, after being classified as a national monument.
If you haven’t yet visited the town of Alandroal and its castle, don’t miss out.
